First, kudos to Joannie and team for again bringing us together in great style. Even though it’s now 55 years since I left Detroit, I still have great memories of our neighborhood and the “It Takes a Village” good childhood we were fortunate to have. I have to drive the area every time I’m in Detroit.  Of course, the affinity isn’t just places, it’s also the people…back then the kids that made life so good.  It was terrific to again see Paula Beth, Stan Jacobson, Rita Gruskin, Zina Pearlman, Ruth Berent , the Keys twins Arnie Rautbort, Tommy Tan and others… a sizable déjà vu of our Bagley classes and long playground baseball days. We unfortunately lost the Gary’s, Alpert and Miller, recently who were my main conduits to happenings of all. I am glad we made the trip and am sorry that this may be the finality of reunions, especially after seeing so many in such great shape.

It was very sad to receive the news on Paula Beth. She was in most of my classes from Bagley third grade through Mumford and lived around the corner. Fortunately, Bev and I sat with her at the Sunday morning breakfast. I believe most of us appreciated all learned from Bagley, Post and Mumford teachers. They were good on math, English, sciences, etc., but I’ve always wondered where we garnered many of our other societal understandings. I believe in retrospect my first understanding of and appreciation for real talent and quality in the arts came from hearing Paula Beth’s extraordinary operatic “performances” in music class and auditorium activities. Yep, we all participated in song in almost “Chipmonks” chirping on demand, but she was the class and classy star. So glad that at breakfast I introduced Bev to Paula saying (I believe to Paula Beth’s delight) that if “America’s Got Talent” were on the air back then, she would have won. I heard she diverted her artistry acumen to interior design in later years. RIP Paula with song in heart!
